Why Grow Leeks?

  • ✅ Long harvest window—plant in autumn/winter and harvest into spring
  • ✅ Excellent storage and versatility in the kitchen
  • ✅ Easy to grow and frost-hardy—a winter garden staple

Where Can You Grow Leeks?

Leeks prefer rich, loamy, well-drained soils in full sun. In cold temperate regions, sow seeds from August to September; in warm temperate areas, sow from May to February; and in subtropical zones, from March to August. Seed germinates best at soil temperatures between 13–24 °C, taking 7–10 days. Sow in trays and transplant after 8–10 weeks.

Health Benefits of Leeks

Leeks are nutritious and low-calorie, offering dietary fibre, vitamin C, K, manganese, and antioxidants. Their mild oniony taste complements a variety of dishes.

Growing Tips

  • Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep in seed trays or directly. Thin or transplant seedlings spaced 10–15 cm apart in rows 30–45 cm apart.
  • Use trench planting or hilling to blanch the stems—this encourages long, white bases.
  • Keep soil consistently moist and remove weeds; mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Watch for rust and thrips; ensure good airflow, avoid over-fertilisation, and remove affected leaves early.

Popular Leek Varieties

  • Bulgarian Giant: Long, thick stems with mild flavour, ideal for autumn and winter harvests.
  • Giant Musselburgh: Scottish heirloom with large, tender stalks—great for deep autumn into spring.
