BROCCOLI ‘Sprouting’ Seeds

Have you ever tried eating a bowl of raw broccoli? You know that it’s good to eat your greens, but it is no easy feat.

Try sprouting broccoli instead. Not only are sprouts easy to eat, but they are yummy and super good for you. Eating a little bit of broccoli sprouts everyday goes a long way for your wellbeing. These tiny greens have been called a superfood.

Benefits of Broccoli Sprouts

John Hopkins University report that broccoli sprouts contain up to 50 times more sulforaphane than mature broccoli (including steamed broccoli florets). Yes, eat steamed broccoli because it’s good for you. Also, eat broccoli sprouts.

How to Use

Add sprouts to sandwiches, salads and as a healthy garnish for cooked dishes. Create a daily habit by adding them to green smoothies. Start your day on a great note.

Fast and Easy to Grow

Sprouts are one of the fastest and easiest crops to grow. In 3 – 5 days, you can eat fresh, living food. As much as we love compost, we also love that sprouts grow with water, seeds, a sprouting jar, and a small amount of effort. No mess. No dirt.

To sprout these seeds, you’ll need a sprouting jar, hemp sprouting bag or a plastic colander with super fine mesh (broccoli seeds are a tiny seed). The jar method is the most popular method. Save money and make your own sprouting jar. All you need to get started is a glass jar, muslin and rubber band to hold it in place.

How to grow broccoli sprouts:

  • Pre-soak seeds:

    4 – 6 hours.

  • Seed Qty:

10 – 20 grams depending on the size of your glass sprouting jar.

  • Method:

Rinse the pre-soaked seeds with cool water for a few minutes. Add the seeds to your jar. Fill jar 3/4 with cool water. Tilt the jar upside down and use the sprouting lid (fancy lid made of muslin and rubber band) to drain the water from your seeds. Leave the jar in an upside-down position for 8-12 hours. This allows the water to drain from the seeds, while maintaining moisture levels. A bowl or dish rack helps keep the jar in a position that allows water to drain. Don’t let the seeds sit in a pool of water.

  • Rinse and repeat:

Every 8-12 hours, you’ll need to rinse your seeds for a few minutes and refill the jar with fresh water. Tilt the jar upside down and leave it to drain. Repeat this process until your sprouts are ready for harvest.

  • Yield:

    Approx. 1 – 1 1/2 cups of living sprouts.
