SNOW PEA ‘Mammoth Melting’ Vegetable Seeds

Botanical Name: Pisum sativum var. macrocarpon

  • Heirloom variety known for its sweet, tender pods and prolific growth.
  • Produces large, crunchy pods that can reach up to 10 cm in length.

Sowing Information:

  • Sow When:
    • Temperate: February – April; avoid sowing during high humidity periods
    • Subtropical: March – September; frost may damage flowers
    • Tropical: March – July
    • Cool: January – April; sow again in September – October
    • Arid: March – July
  • Germination: 7 – 14 days
  • Depth: 2 – 3 cm deep, soak seeds overnight before sowing
  • Position: Full sun, sheltered from strong winds
  • Sow Where: Direct into the garden bed or seed trays for transplanting
  • Soil Type: Fertile, well-drained soil with a pH of 6 – 7; prepare with compost and lightly mulch
  • Spacing: 5 – 10 cm between plants, with rows 45 – 60 cm apart

Growing instructions (microgreens)

  • Grow in soil or coir peat; hydroponic methods are not recommended.
  • Soak 250 grams of seeds in cold water for 4 – 8 hours (10 x 20′ growing tray).
  • Cover with ample water as these seeds will double in size during pre-soaking.
  • Sprout seeds for approximately 1 – 2 days using a sprouting jar or tray.
  • Plant seeds when they have sprouted a ‘tail’ that is approximately 2 – 3 mm.
  • Add 2 – 3 cm of soil or coir peat to your growing tray; flatten the soil and lightly water.
  • Sprinkle seeds evenly over the surface and lightly water again.
  • Cover with a growing tray and store in a well-ventilated, cool, dark spot; water 1 – 2 times daily.
  • After 2 – 4 days, remove the top tray to expose the plants to light; water twice daily.
  • Ready to harvest in 8 – 14 days.
