BROCCOLI ‘Sprouting’ Seeds

Botanical name: Brassica oleracea var. italica
Variety: Italian Sprouting Calabrese (heirloom)

Broccoli ‘Sprouting’ seeds are a fast-growing brassica variety commonly used for producing sprouts or microgreens. These small seeds germinate quickly and can produce tender young shoots in just a few days under the right conditions.

Broccoli sprouts are widely grown by home gardeners and sprouting enthusiasts. Young broccoli shoots contain naturally occurring plant compounds such as glucosinolates and sulforaphane that have been studied in scientific literature.

These seeds are sold as untreated seed for growing purposes.

Growing Broccoli Sprouts

Sprouts are one of the fastest crops to produce at home. With the right moisture and temperature conditions, seeds typically begin germinating within a few days.

Many people grow broccoli sprouts using simple equipment such as a glass jar, hemp sprouting bag, or fine mesh colander. The jar method is one of the most common approaches.

To create a simple sprouting jar, use a clean glass jar covered with muslin or cloth secured with a rubber band.

How to Grow Broccoli Sprouts

  • Pre-soak seeds:

    4 – 6 hours.

  • Seed quantity:

Approximately 10 – 20 grams depending on the size of your sprouting jar.

  • Method:

After soaking, rinse the seeds thoroughly with cool water. Place the seeds into a jar and fill with fresh water. Cover the jar with breathable cloth or a sprouting lid, then drain the water so the seeds remain moist but not submerged. Position the jar upside down at an angle to allow excess water to drain.

  • Rinse and repeat:

Rinse the seeds with fresh water every 8–12 hours. Drain thoroughly each time to avoid standing water. Continue this process until sprouts reach the desired size.

  • Yield:

Approximately 1 – 1½ cups of fresh sprouts depending on seed quantity and growing conditions.
