Plant Diversity & the Gut Microbiome
Eating a diverse range of plant foods has become an important area of interest in gut microbiome research.
The widely discussed American Gut Project found differences in the gut microbial communities of participants who reported eating more than 30 different types of plants per week compared with those eating 10 or fewer.
WickiMix does not make 30 plants a magic number. Instead, the seed collection takes a simple idea from this research: grow more variety so it becomes easier to eat more variety.
With four different mixes, gardeners can grow and regularly harvest a broad selection of fresh leafy vegetables, herbs, legumes and edible shoots from a relatively small growing area.

How to Grow WickiMix Seed Mixes
WickiMix contains plants with different seed sizes, germination times and growth habits. The aim is not to grow every plant to full maturity at the same time. Instead, sow for diversity and progressively harvest plants as the bed develops.
- Prepare the growing bed.
For the complete WickiMix system, prepare the bed according to the WickiMix setup instructions. The seeds can also be grown in an established wicking bed, raised garden bed or suitable container containing a fertile growing medium. - Sow the seeds.
Scatter the mix over the growing area and lightly press or rake the seed into the surface. Because the mixes contain seeds of different sizes, avoid burying the entire mixture deeply. - Keep moist during establishment.
Maintain consistent moisture while the seeds germinate and young seedlings establish. Avoid allowing the surface to dry excessively during germination. - Allow the plants to grow together.
Different varieties will germinate and develop at different rates. This is intentional. Faster-growing plants can provide an early harvest while slower species continue developing. - Thin by harvesting.
Harvest young leaves and shoots from vigorous plants as the bed becomes crowded. This creates additional light and growing space for surrounding plants. - Reseed as required.
As plants are harvested or finish growing, sow additional seed into open areas to maintain a diverse and productive bed.
When to Sow WickiMix Seed Mixes in Australia
Because each WickiMix packet contains several different species, there is no single ideal sowing season for every seed in the mixture. Germination and growth will vary according to temperature, climate and season.

The changing seasons are part of growing a diverse mixture. Not every variety will dominate at the same time, allowing the character of the bed — and what you harvest from it — to change throughout the year.
Can I Grow WickiMix Seeds in an Existing Wicking Bed?
Yes. Although the seed mixes were developed for the WickiMix Living Soil Growing System, they can also be used in existing wicking beds, raised garden beds and suitable containers.
For existing wicking beds, use a fertile growing medium with good structure and avoid maintaining excessively waterlogged conditions around the root zone.
The mixes are particularly useful where you want to replace a single-crop planting with a broader selection of edible plants without buying and sowing many individual packets separately.
Harvesting Your WickiMix Garden
Harvesting will vary between the different plants. Young leafy vegetables and shoots can generally be harvested first, while slower-growing herbs and perennial species can remain in the bed for continued growth.
Pick individual leaves, growing tips and shoots as required rather than removing the entire planting at once. Larger plants can be thinned where necessary to prevent them shading smaller varieties.
As gaps develop, sow more seed to keep the bed productive and maintain a changing mixture of edible plants.
