Growing Tips for Australian Gardeners:

  • Prepare beds with plenty of well-rotted compost or aged manure to ensure good nutrition and bulb development.
  • Onions prefer a slightly alkaline soil pH around 6.5–7.0; test and lime the soil if needed.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist during germination and early growth, but avoid waterlogging as onions dislike wet feet.
  • Apply a balanced fertiliser every 4–6 weeks during the growing season for strong, healthy bulbs.
  • When bulbs begin to swell and tops start to fall over naturally, stop watering to allow skins to firm up for harvest.
  • Harvest when 70–80% of the tops have bent over and started to yellow.
  • For best storage, cure harvested bulbs in a dry, shaded area with good airflow for 2–3 weeks until the necks are completely dry.

Additional Notes:

  • Gladalan White is particularly suited for Australian conditions where winters are mild and rainfall is moderate.
  • In humid regions, ensure good airflow to reduce the risk of fungal diseases such as downy mildew and neck rot.
  • Avoid over-fertilising with nitrogen once bulbs start forming, as this can lead to excessive leaf growth and poor storage quality.
  • This variety stores very well when properly cured and kept in a cool, dry place.
