HERB ‘Basil Genovese’ Seeds
Botanical Name: Ocimum basilicum
Basil Genovese is a traditional Italian variety known for its large, aromatic leaves that are perfect for making pesto and pairing with tomato-based dishes. This relatively slow-bolting variety ensures a longer harvesting period, making it a popular choice for culinary herb gardens.
Plant Type: Annual herb, ideal for sunny spots with well-drained soil.
Plant Height: Grows up to 60 cm when fully mature.
Sow When:
- Temperate: September – December
- Subtropical: August – January
- Tropical: All year round
- Arid: September – February
- Cool: September – January
Germination: Seeds germinate best when soil temperatures are between 18°C and 35°C. Germination takes 7 – 14 days.
Depth: Sow seeds approximately 0.5 cm deep in the soil.
Position: Thrives in full sun with well-drained, moist soil.
Sow Where: Directly into garden beds or containers, or start indoors and transplant when seedlings are strong enough.
Soil Type: Prefers rich, well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5.
Spacing: Space plants approximately 30 cm apart and rows 30 – 50 cm apart for proper growth.
Harvest (Herb): Leaves can be harvested 60 – 80 days after sowing. Regular harvesting encourages more growth.
Growing Instructions (Microgreens)
- Do not pre-soak seeds.
- Use approximately 10 grams of seeds for a 30 x 35 cm growing tray.
- Add 2 – 3 cm of soil to the tray. Flatten soil and moisten before sowing.
- Sprinkle seeds evenly over the soil surface and lightly water.
- Cover seeds with a growing tray and store in a well-ventilated, dark spot during germination.
- Water 1 – 2 times daily during germination. Germination time is 7 – 14 days.
- After germination, remove the top tray and expose the plants to direct sunlight. Continue watering twice daily.
Harvest (Microgreens): 20 – 25 days after sowing. Cut microgreens 1-2 cm above the soil.
