Legume Seed Inoculant – Group I Warm Season Legume Group

Inoculant Group: Group I
Suitable For: Mung Bean, Cowpea, Sunn Hemp, Moth Bean, Dune Bean, Rice Bean, Snake Bean, Creeping Vigna and related warm-season legumes

Legume Seed Inoculant Group I is a specialist rhizobium inoculant used when sowing selected warm-season legumes. It helps compatible legumes form strong root nodules, allowing plants to fix atmospheric nitrogen and improve soil fertility naturally.

This inoculant is especially useful when planting into new ground, garden beds, paddocks, orchards, cover crop areas or green manure rotations where these legumes have not been grown recently. Using the correct inoculant group can improve nodulation, plant vigour, nitrogen fixation and overall soil-building performance.

  • Group I rhizobium inoculant for warm-season legumes.
  • Suitable for mung bean, cowpea, sunn hemp, moth bean, rice bean, snake bean and related species.
  • Supports strong root nodulation and biological nitrogen fixation.
  • Helps improve green manure, cover crop, pasture and soil-building performance.
  • Useful where compatible legumes have not been grown recently.
  • Can reduce reliance on synthetic nitrogen fertiliser in suitable legume systems.

Application Rates

Inoculant Pack Size Treats Up To Best For
5 g 2.5 kg of seed Small gardens, cover crops and trial plantings
25 g 12.5 kg of seed Larger gardens, orchards, small paddocks and green manure areas
50 g 25 kg of seed Cover crops, paddocks, pasture, green manure and broadacre sowing

How to Use

  1. Place seed into a clean bucket, tray or mixing container.
  2. Lightly moisten the seed with clean water or a mild sticking solution.
  3. Add the inoculant and mix thoroughly until all seed is evenly coated.
  4. Sow treated seed as soon as possible after inoculation.
  5. Keep inoculated seed out of direct sunlight, heat and drying wind.
  6. Do not mix inoculated seed directly with fertiliser or chemical seed treatments.

When Should You Use Group I Inoculant?

  • When sowing mung bean, cowpea, sunn hemp, snake bean or related warm-season legumes.
  • When planting into soil where compatible legumes have not been grown recently.
  • When sowing green manure, cover crop or regenerative soil-building blends containing Group I legumes.
  • When soil rhizobia levels are unknown.
  • When strong nitrogen fixation and early establishment are important.

Climate and Growing Use in Australia

Group I inoculant can be used wherever compatible warm-season legumes are sown in Australia. The inoculant itself is not climate-specific, but the legume crop must be suited to the season and region.

  • Tropical Regions: Suitable for warm-season legumes grown during suitable wet or dry season windows, depending on species.
  • Subtropical Regions: Useful for spring, summer and early autumn sowings of cowpea, sunn hemp, mung bean and related legumes.
  • Temperate Regions: Best used with warm-season legumes sown after frost risk has passed.
  • Cool Regions: Use only during the warmest growing window, as many Group I legumes are frost-sensitive.
  • Arid Regions: Use where irrigation or seasonal rainfall supports establishment and active growth.

Storage and Handling

  • Store refrigerated where possible.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight and heat.
  • Use before the expiry date for best performance.
  • Do not leave inoculant or treated seed in a hot vehicle or exposed area.
  • Sow inoculated seed promptly after treatment.

Important Notes

  • Use the correct inoculant group for the legume species being sown.
  • Group I is for selected warm-season legumes, including several Vigna species and sunn hemp.
  • It is not suitable for every legume crop.
  • Nitrogen fixation depends on compatible rhizobia, suitable soil conditions, plant health, warmth and moisture.
  • Poor soil pH, chemical residues, heat, drought or waterlogging can reduce inoculant performance.
