Product Description

Mugwort is a traditional perennial herb grown for its aromatic foliage, attractive upright habit and strong adaptability in the garden. It is a hardy member of the Artemisia family and is well suited to gardeners looking for a resilient, low-maintenance herb with ornamental appeal.

Plants produce tall stems with deeply cut green leaves and pale silvery undersides. The foliage has a distinctive herbal aroma and provides useful texture in herb gardens, cottage gardens, pollinator areas and naturalised planting spaces.

Mugwort is best grown in a dedicated garden bed or contained area, as mature plants can spread once established. It performs well in full sun to part shade and tolerates poorer soils better than many softer culinary herbs.

How to Grow Mugwort

Sow Mugwort seeds on the surface of a quality seed raising mix and press lightly into the soil. Do not bury deeply, as the seeds require light for best germination. Keep the mix evenly moist but not waterlogged until seedlings emerge.

Transplant seedlings when they are large enough to handle and have developed a strong root system. Choose a sunny to partly shaded position with well-drained soil. Mugwort is tolerant of poorer soils once established, but young plants benefit from moderate moisture and protection from competition.

Once established, Mugwort is hardy and drought tolerant. Trim plants as needed to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth. In smaller gardens, grow in a contained bed or large pot to help manage spread.

Harvest

Harvest young leaves and stems once plants are well established. Pick small amounts regularly rather than cutting the whole plant back heavily. For drying, harvest leafy stems before flowering and hang in a warm, dry, well-ventilated position.
