Perlite Fine or Medium Grade
Perlite is an all natural, siliceous volcanic rock that is used in soilless grow mediums to improve aeration, insulation and drainage.
- pH neutral and sterile growing media.
- Make your own potting mix (e.g. 70% coir peat and 30% perlite).
- The ‘sponge-like’ structure of perlite adds space to your grow medium to help roots draw water up into the plant.
- Provides excellent soil insulation.
- Helps loosen heavy soil.
- Popular for hydroponics.
- Lightweight.
- Easy to work with.
- Can speed up germination and improve the growth of seedlings.
What is perlite?
Perlite is a naturally occurring volcanic rock that has been super-heated until it expands into lightweight, white, porous granules. It is widely used in gardening and horticulture to improve drainage and aeration in soils and soilless growing media.
The porous structure of perlite increases oxygen availability to plant roots and assists with water drainage and nutrient delivery. It is ideal for hydroponic systems, seed raising, container gardening, and soil conditioning.
Soil-free grow medium
- Use perlite alone or blended with coir, peat moss, vermiculite, compost, or other media to create a well-balanced, free-draining potting mix.
- Excellent for starting seeds, propagating cuttings, and growing microgreens or hydroponic crops.
- Maintains good moisture and airflow around delicate root systems.
Sterile and inert
- Perlite is sterile, pH neutral, and free from weeds, pathogens or contaminants, making it safe for food crops.
- Does not decompose, rot, or compact over time—long-lasting in growing systems.
- Non-toxic and safe for organic and hydroponic gardening.
Improves soil aeration and drainage
- Creates air pockets in the soil, helping roots access oxygen and reducing the risk of root rot.
- Improves drainage in heavy soils like clay and reduces compaction in pots.
- Ideal for plants that prefer well-drained growing conditions.
Moisture regulation
- Holds some water while allowing excess to drain, preventing waterlogging.
- Buffers moisture around young roots during germination and early growth.
- Supports even watering and root hydration in mixed media.
Supports nutrient uptake
- Improves nutrient delivery in soilless mixes by keeping roots aerated and hydrated.
- Reduces compaction and helps with fertiliser dispersion in potting media.
- Ideal for crops requiring precise nutrient and moisture management.
