USDA Small Seeds Lot Permit

In order to import seeds for sowing into the USA, you are required to obtain both an import permit and a phytosanitary certificate.

Small lots of seeds can be imported without a phytosanitary certificate if the seed meets certain conditions including:

  • Maximum of 50 seeds of 1 taxon (taxonomic category such as genus, species, cultivar) per packet OR a maximum weight of 10 grams of seed of 1 taxon per packet.
  • Maximum of 50 seed packets per shipment.

PROCESS FOR OBTAINING PERMIT

ePermits can be obtained by you as the importer. The process is simple and can be done online at no cost. The permit is valid for 3 years and allows you to use it for multiple seed imports.

Step 1: Register online with USDA

Register online for an eAuthentication USDA Level 2 Account. You will then be able to apply for permits electronically in a fast and convenient way.

Step 2: Obtain the Import Permit

Go to eFile to apply for and obtain a PPQ 587 import permit.

Contact us if you require assistance with completing the details for the permit. We can provide information regarding:

  • Country of Origin.
  • Scientific/Botanical names.

Step 3: Send us a Copy of your Permit

Once you have received your e-permit, and one green and yellow shipping label from the USDA, please email it to [email protected], and we can process your order.
