Onion ‘Early White’ UT
Botanical Name: Allium cepa
‘Early White’ is an excellent, early, ‘short day’ onion grown mainly in Queensland. They are only a ‘fair’ keeper and are used mainly as a ‘fresh’ or ‘spring’ onion. The bulbs are globe-shaped with an attractive white skin and pungent flavor. ‘Early White’ can be planted from late February to May in Queensland. Unsuitable for Tasmania. Days to harvest: 165 – 195.
Planting Time: Plant ‘Early White’ onion seeds in Queensland from late February to May. Ensure the soil temperature is suitable for onion germination and growth.
Location: Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil. Onions prefer full sunlight for at least 6-8 hours a day.
Soil Preparation: Prepare the soil by adding well-rotted compost or organic matter to improve fertility. Ensure a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH (around 6.0 to 7.0).
Planting Depth: Plant the seeds about 1/2 to 1 inch deep in the soil. Space the seeds or seedlings 4-6 inches apart in rows, allowing sufficient room for bulb development.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the germination and bulb development stages. Avoid overwatering, as onions are susceptible to rot in waterlogged soil.
